Jo Giddens and Marty Vreede formed a bit of secret society to prepare for the exhibition, 4 x 2, which opens at Space Gallery tonight.
The two former UCOL lecturers say they enjoyed being the only two members of a club where they could work in an otherwise empty print studio.
"We have used lumber sizes as the basic metre for the constructions," said Vreede.
The process for the works began with paper which was produced by Vreede and wife Marilyn.
The couple make their Pakahe Quality Papers from harakeke and Vreede said it makes the whole process more authentic when the paper the work is printed on is handmade.
The finished works have some clever puns within the letter arrangements and Giddens said she has become quite "smitten" with construction terminology.
She is the winner of the 2017 Taranaki Art Awards 3D category for her Quarter Acre Dream entry which she says is related to her works in 4x2.
Giddens is one of four Whanganui artists recognised at the awards - Mark Rayner was awarded first prize in the Fibre Art section for Paula, Nicky Gerard was commended in the Photography category for Sling/Slung, Margaret Silverwood in the Works on Paper category for Hover and Taihape artist Timoti Pekamu won the Toi Tu Taranaki section for Spotlight Fleece.
4x2 opens at Space Gallery, 64 Taupo Quay at 5.30pm tonight and will be open for viewing until November 10.
