Residents have been left to clean up the wreckage of a police car chase that ploughed through Whanganui's Aramoho cemetery and into their private property.
At 1am on Saturday, a woman who who lives at the end of McNeil St was woken by police sirens and a loud crash.
"A car came screaming up the cemetery at what seemed like 100km/h and through our driveway and hit our front post and a second post," she told the Chronicle.
"Then the police caught them and arrested them - and now we are responsible for the damage."
Her property can be accessed only through the cemetery, and she said she was fed up with the amount of wreckage at the burial ground.
"Something needs to be done to stop it.
"A couple of other times we've had people crash into the yard but not to this extent ... and few weeks ago there were guys causing havoc in the cemetery but nothing seems to get done about it."
The woman said she wanted the cemetery closed off at night to stop people causing damage.
"There are three gates, so whether it's a gate closing it off or even a metal chain so people can't drive through it, but something needs to happen - it's ridiculous."
She was happy the police had arrested the driver but was not impressed that she and her neighbours were left to clean up the damage.
"I called the police on Saturday and was told it was my responsibility and I need to call my insurance - and that just does not sound right to me."
