Sunflowers, butterflies, moths and starry night skies are on display at Cooks Gallery in Whanganui these school holidays.
The exhibition curators may be considerably younger and shorter than the Wanganui Arts Society members who usually frequent the gallery but they know their art.
Emily Paterson, 8, and her sister Hazel, 6, are welcoming visitors to view the children's Art House exhibition.
The girls have been working with their after-school tutor Rae Hendry and other students to produce works based on Vincent Van Gogh's paintings Sunflowers and The Starry Night.
"I really enjoyed working on the 'starry night' picture," said Emily.
"I loved making it really shiny."
Next to the starry works is a display of night-moth pictures and strings of coloured lights help to illuminate the paintings.
The other end of the room has a wall of spring butterfly paintings alongside the sunflower works.
Hazel said painting the sunflowers made her feel happy.
"They are nice and bright."
Ms Hendry said it had been a delight to see how each of the 20 plus students in the group depicted the same subject differently.
"Each one picked out different details to highlight in their work.
"They were given free rein on the backgrounds and some chose blue sky while others painted rainbows."
Emily, Hazel and their mother Vicky will be at the gallery in Trafalgar Pl to welcome visitors on Tuesday and other young artists and their families will be there each day during the school holidays.
Ms Hendry said visiting children could use supplied art materials to create their own works to add to the exhibition.
