Colourful wigs and wacky hairdos were the style of the day for Tyler Bisset and his friends at St Johns Hill School yesterday. As one of four young ambassadors for the Child Cancer Foundation, Tyler helps to raise support for children and families undergoing treatment and hospital stays.
Now in remission, Tyler has a necklace with more than 700 beads representing every cancer treatment and challenge he has faced.
Tawhero School and Porse home educators in Whanganui formed part of the national Wig Wednesday fundraising campaign .
Many schools, businesses and individuals including world heavyweight boxing champion Joseph Parker donned hairpieces to support the cause.
After meeting children and their families undergoing cancer treatment Parker said he felt humbled by their courage.
"These children have gone through so much in their lives and continue to live optimistically - a great lesson is to be learned here," he said.
St Johns Hill School principal Michael Fitzgerald and teachers Jennifer Thrasyulou and Michelle Butters also wore their wigs for the day.
"We are very proud of our young ambassador Tyler," said Mr Fitzgerald.
"He inspires us all."
As a stand-alone charity, Child Cancer Foundation receives no direct funding from the Government, so relies on the generosity of New Zealanders to support its cause.
