While much of the country is bracing itself for heavy rain and gale force winds, it appears Wanganui will again be spared the worst of it.
MetService has issued severe weather warnings for Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Horowhenua, Kapiti Coast, and Malborough - but not Wanganui.
However, a weather watch has been issued for strong winds in Wanganui, which may last into today.
Wanganui District Council's emergency manager, Max Benseman, said it appeared the worst of the weather would skirt around Wanganui.
"Most of the rain will impact to the east and north of us, although we may get some gale force winds," Mr Benseman said.
He said emergency management staff would liaise with staff from Horizons Regional Council and the MetService to monitor the weather as it moves southwards. Today's weather forecast for Wanganui is for rain easing to showers, and strong winds also easing. Showers are due to clear tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Mr Benseman said the Whanganui River was dropping rapidly, after it flooded Kowhai Park and other riverside areas on Monday.
