There has been a bit of a panic around potatoes lately. A poor harvest due to wet weather has created fear among potato chip fans that their beloved product is now in short supply.
Chief executive of Potato New Zealand Chris Claridge spoke to The Country to clarify whether it's all media-hype or if there actually is a "Great New Zealand Potato Famine."
Continuous rain up north since March has caused crops to rot in the fields and hindered farmers from be able to harvest says Claridge. However, New Zealand is lucky to have crops "from Northland all the way through to Bluff", so supply is continuous if not as high as usual.
Also in today's interview, Chris explains why potatoes are like wine, what his favourite potato is and a brief overview of the Irish Potato Famine.
