Listen: Mark Townshend water policy 'picks on farmers'

One of New Zealand's leading dairy farmers Mark Townshend was so upset by Labour's proposed water tax, he felt compelled to write to The Country.

"We should not discriminate on the grounds of race, sex or religion but we're doing so when it comes to occupations."

Townshend feels farming has been unfairly targeted for irrigation usage when other industries are also major water users.

Another contentious issue facing farmers is dairy cow numbers. Townshend says a reduction in cows would lead to less food produced and an opportunity for other nations to produce it. "The real problem is not too many cows, the real problem is world population."
