DairyNZ welcomes the prosecution of two men whose mistreatment of cows in 2015 has been called the largest case of animal neglect in the South Island dairy sector.
Animal Welfare and Husbandry Scientist for DairyNZ, Helen Thoday spoke to The Country's Dom George today about the case and its possible implications.
Ms Thoday is "appalled" the abuse happened in the dairy industry and urges farmers to reach out for help, whether for themselves or someone else if they suspect animal welfare is at risk.
Ms Thoday believes New Zealand's worldwide dairy reputation is safe, saying the majority of Kiwi farmers are passionate about what they do.
"We are really confident that moving forward these cases become few and far between."
Finally Dom asks Helen for an update on the mycoplasma bovis outbreak in South Canterbury.
