The ski season has only just started, but it's already looking to be a good one, says Alan Jamieson.
Alan, owner operator of Taranaki Ski Hire, says he was almost completely cleared out of ski and snowboarding equipment over the weekend of July 15 and 16.
The weekend trade was mainly tourists, says Alan.
"The locals knew it was going to be packed on the mountain so I think those who could, waited and came during the week instead."
Alan says it is the third year he has had the business, which operates from Pembroke Road on the way up to the mountain.
"Sunday the 16th was the biggest day of trade I have had since we first opened. If it carries on like this, then this year will be a great year for us."
Alan says the combination of good weather, a decent dumping of snow and the fact it was the school holidays helped make it so busy.
"Obviously we are in a convenient location as well. People drive past us on their way to the mountain. Not everyone owns their own gear so they can call in, get fitted for the right size skis, boots etc and get on their way with the minimum of fuss."
Alan bought the equipment for the business when a New Plymouth-based business was closing down.
"I thought it was a good business idea, and personally believe a ski hire place is needed near the mountain to help make the snow accessible to everyone."
Alan says he hopes the season continues as well as it has started.
"We are lucky to live so close to Mount Taranaki and we really need to make the most of the opportunities on our doorstep when it comes to enjoying the great Kiwi outdoors."
