GJ Gardner Homes Wanganui Athletic now have their sights set on second place in the Lotto Federation football championships after gifting Watsons PN Marist the title at Memorial Park in Palmerston North on Saturday.
Going into Saturday's encounter as undisputed underdogs, Athletic were expected to struggle against the unbeaten Shane Rufer-coached side, so it was with some pride they actually only fell 3-2.
Marist only needed one win from its remaining four matches to claim the title, although they did need to scramble in the second half to gain the ascendancy.
Athletic coach Jason King said his lads were 2-nil up at half time after following their game plan to contain the strong numbers in the Marist midfield.
"We were feeling pretty good and the game plan was working in the first half," King said.
Josh Smith from Athletic's attacking line-up scored both goals for Wanganui, both from set pieces (corners).
"However, a bit of complacency crept in and we went off our game plan a wee bit in the second spell. Although in saying that Marist came out really strong and they wanted the win and the championship.
"One of their goal was a penalty and we did have a couple of chances, so we were a bit unlucky not to come away with a draw.
"At the aftermatch function Shane praised us saying that we were the best team they had played against in this competition. While we didn't enjoy losing, it was quite pleasing someone of his standing said we were the best team they'd played."
King said the focus now was to aim for second in the competition with strong winning performances in the next three remaining games.
"We play Red Sox at home, North End at home and then an away game with North End. We pretty much need to win them all," King said.
