Two women who were the subject of a vicious unprovoked attack in Auckland are recovering well, police say.
Detectives investigating the assault on an Auckland woman and her daughter are now asking the public for help as new information about the assaults is revealed.
A 55-year-old Point Chevalier woman was getting into her own car on Monday, July 17, when she was attacked from behind.
Police originally believed she was approaching a neighbour's car which was allegedly being broken into, but on Saturday police said they believed she was getting into her own car.
The woman was kicked and punched until she was unconscious.
When her daughter, aged in her 20s, attempted to intervene, she too was attacked and she suffered abrasions and bruising.
"The victims are recovering well and receiving ongoing support," police said on Saturday.
Area investigations manager Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Armstrong said formal interviews and the completion of scene examinations showed that the woman was getting into her own car at the time of the attack.
"She was assaulted from behind without warning, while approaching her own car, in her own driveway," Detective Senior Sergeant Armstrong said.
"Another vehicle on her driveway appears to have been interfered with by the offenders prior to the assault, however the victim was not aware of this at the time."
The men are then alleged to have stolen the victim's car keys before driving off in her blue Volkswagen Polo hatchback.
The car was later discovered in a neighbouring suburb.
Police are asking members of the public who witnessed suspicious activity in the area to contact Auckland City Police Station on 09 302 6400.
