A man allegedly filmed by a Christchurch homeowner leaving her property denies that he was caught in the act of a burglary.
Brendon James Smith, 44, and a 36-year-old woman have been charged over the alleged burglary at a Worthy St house in the suburb of Avonhead on June 9.
Police said Smith, of Aranui, was allegedly filmed by the victim "in the act of committing the offence".
"Police have spoken with the victim who was pleased to hear of the arrests and grateful that the offenders will be held to account," a police statement earlier said.
Smith appeared via audio visual link from prison this morning.
Defence counsel Josh Lucas said Smith denied the charges and elected trial by jury.
He also faces charges of assaulting and resisting police in Westport. Smith asked for those charges to be transferred to Christchurch.
Judge Tony Couch remanded him in custody to a case review hearing on August 30.
A 36-year-old Woolston woman, alleged to have driven the man from the scene, has been charged with burglary and on April 26, of stealing groceries valued at $181.45 from Raeward Fresh supermarket on Marshland Rd, Christchurch.
She was remanded on bail without plea to July 5.
