MP saddened by vandalism
Te Tai Tokerau MP and deputy leader of the Labour Party Kelvin Davis has expressed his sadness over a vandalism attack on his old school, Bay of Islands College in Kawakawa.
Around 5am on January 6, doors and windows were smashed, a workroom trashed and a trophy cabinet packed with trophies dating back to the school's founding in the 1950s was badly damaged. Staff are trying to organise repairs before school starts next month.
Mr Davis said he was proud to be a Bay of Islands College old boy and his name was probably on a few of the damaged trophies. ''The college is an important part of the community and it's sad that this has happened.'' A 16-year-old Kawakawa youth has been arrested and charged with burglary and wilful damage.
Hunt for thief
Police are looking for a man described as Maori, 1.8m tall and of slim build who was wearing camouflage pants and a white hoodie when he threw a slab of concrete through a sheet of Clearlite plastic to gain entry to commercial premises in Kaitaia on Sunday afternoon. He is believed to have got away with a full ashtray.
