Shooting scene
The forensic examination of a Whangarei house where two men were fatally shot has been completed. About 12 officers continue to investigate the deaths following the shootings at McMillan Ave about 1.15pm on Saturday.
Detective Inspector Dene Begbie said the names of the deceased were not being released until police were sure all family members had been contacted.
The scene examination was completed on Sunday afternoon and Mr Begbie thanked all the residents in the street for their patience.
Police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the fatal incident.
Hook, line and $2000
Hooking the heaviest snapper could land someone $2000 at Waipu Boat and Fishing Club's annual fishing competition at Labour Weekend. There will be more than $7000 in cash and other prizes at the popular event, a lure which has organisers advising people to get in quick to buy a limited ticket.
The competition takes place during Saturday, October 21 and Sunday 22, with the Fish Auction on Sunday about 4pm. Tickets cost $40 per adult (under-16 free), from Waipu Tyres, McCoy $ Thomas Okara, or waipuboatandfishingclub@gmail.com
By-election starters
Last year's unsuccessful mayoral candidate Peter Gill (Waipapa), and Jane Johnston (Haruru Falls) say they will contest the by-election that will be called to fill the vacancy in the Far North District Council's Bay of Islands - Whangaroa Ward by Willow-Jean Prime's winning of a parliamentary list seat for Labour.
The by-election will be conducted by Auckland-based Election Services, possibly before the end of the year.
