Voters in Havelock North appeared to be organised today with very few people casting last minute votes at polling booths before 7pm this evening.
Earlier today voters queued at Havelock North High School to have their say but for the last few hours only a handful of people trickled into the school at any one time.
One voter said she had not voted at the high school before and usually went to the closest venue each election.
Michelle Williams popped into the Havelock North Bridge Club at about 6.30pm, leaving Molly, her 18-month-old lowchen dog outside while she cast her vote.
She lived only a few streets away from the club and had voted there for the last few elections because it was so handy.
She said she had to vote last minute while her children were at home with their dad before he went to work this evening.
Jeremy Pearson was also only able to vote just before polls closed because he had spent the day looking after a dozen 9-10 year old boys during his son's birthday party.
He recently moved to Hawke's Bay from Dunedin and found the bridge club to be a very easy place to vote.
"It was simple, straightforward, effective and efficient," he said.
After casting his vote he was going home and having people over for an election party.
"We're going to watch the results and watch the footage from last night."
