It doesn't matter whether or not you have a cape, the Cancer Society is urging people to become superheroes and register for Relay for Life 2018 – which will for the first time be held in Cambridge.
The inspiring community event, where team members take turns walking or running around a track, gives people the chance to celebrate cancer survivors and carers; remember loved ones lost to cancer; and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work of Cancer Society.
Catriona Findlay, fundraising manager for the Cancer Society, says that the event will have a carnival-like atmosphere with 12 hours of non-stop entertainment.
"With plenty of music and live entertainment, this is a great opportunity for friends, families and co-workers to enjoy a fun day out while making a difference for people with cancer in the community."
The event will ensure the Cancer Society can provide practical and emotional support for people with cancer in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. Ms Findlay says that the charity relies on events such as this to ensure these services remain free.
"Donations and fundraising events like Relay For Life ensure our liaison nurses are in the community every day supporting people from the time they are diagnosed with cancer.
"From providing emotional support advocacy and helping them navigate the medical system to connecting them with Cancer Society practical support services including transport to treatment, therapeutic massage, accommodation and frozen meals; the work that we do in the community can make all the difference for someone during a challenging time."
The event is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and there is no minimum team size.
