Album Review: The Great Gatsby soundtrack

By Kim Gillespie

If you saw the film you'll already know what to expect - a soundtrack full of languid, 20s-laced tunes that set a sultry, dark tone, and which scream opulence and suggest a raging undercurrent.

It's this scene-setting that saves the soundtrack. The problem with cover songs, as some of these are, is that they usually remind you of the superiority of the original. But, given the nature of the film, these songs, like Beyonce and Andre 3000's cover of Amy Winehouse's Back to Black, and Emeli Sande's Crazy in Love, really do work well (not so much Bryan Ferry's cover of his own Love is the Drug).

Highlights include Lana del Rey's Young and Beautiful and Jack White's pained cover of U2's Love is Blindness. As with many soundtracks, it's a mix of styles, but it's held together well by the theme. Get lost in the world of Gatsby.
