Bay of Plenty Federated Farmers is gearing up for its annual Farm Day next month and members of the public are being encouraged to head along for an "Out in the Paddock" experience.
The event has been hosted by dairy farmers Andrew and Robyn McLeod for the past four years on their property at Welcome Bay. In 2013, over 1000 visitors attended the event with numbers expected to increase this year.
Environmental sustainability would be a major focus, Mr McLeod said, and it was a great opportunity for urban people to see a working farm.
"We are focused on looking after our cows and the environment. I will be talking about the dynamics of running a dairy farm and on farm production."
Attractions on the day included a milk tanker, a sheep module, horse rides, a tractor display and milking as well as expert speakers.
"It's a really neat free day out for kids and people who want to enjoy a day on a farm. A couple of generations ago everyone had an uncle or cousin on the farm and it just isn't like that these days so it's a good chance to see what it's like."
Federated Farmers Bay of Plenty provincial president Rick Powdrell said the event was designed to showcase agriculture to the public. "It gives people of all ages an insight into the efforts that are going into sustainable farming and also an insight to the employment opportunities in agriculture."
