No one was injured.
Police are currently at the scene conducting a scene examination and speaking to witnesses.
Those involved in the robbery will receive ongoing support, police said.
Anyone who was at the scene or has information and hasn't yet spoken to police, is asked to contact Auckland Police on 09 302 6400.
Auckland CIB are investigating.
The incident followed a number of cash-in-transit van robberies in the city this year.
A cash van was robbed at Eden Park after the first Lions and All Blacks test in the early hours of June 25.
Two stadium staff members in a security van were threatened by two armed men and an unknown amount of cash was taken.
Another security van was robbed by three people - one armed with a gun - in broad daylight near the main entrance of The Warehouse in Royal Oak on May 9.
A sum of cash was also taken during an armed robbery of a cash security van outside ASB Bank on Dominion Rd, Mt Roskill, in April.
